High River is a town with a population of 10,716 located in Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the southwestern portion of the province only 23 miles from Calgary. High River hosts exciting annual festivals and events. It is also the birthplace of Joe Clark, a former Canadian Prime Minister. The town was officially incorporated in 1906 and is named after the Highwood River which passes though the town.

Numerous institutes of higher education are located throughout the province. Neighboring Calgary offers the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary. Primary and secondary students are served by the Foothills School Division and Christ the Redeemer Catholic School Division. High River has two high schools, one middle school and three elementary schools. Highwood High School opened in 1996 and serves grades 9-12 with a student enrollment of over 600.

High River has exciting annual festivals throughout the year. Popular events include the High River Music Festival, Little Britches Rodeo and Parade, Labour Day Golf Tournament and North American Chuckwagon Championships. The town also has weekly Farmers Markets throughout the summer. The Highwood River provides outdoor recreation including canoeing, fishing and swimming. The Bob Snodgrass Recreation Complex is another great location. It offers a swimming pool, ice arenas, and curling rink. Golf enthusiasts will love the Highwood Golf & Country Club. It features a challenging 27-hole course with scenic views. Other notable locations include the Museum of the Highwood and the Bar U Ranch.

Calgary Real Estate Board Totals for July 2008:

Towns (Outside of Calgary) - there were a total of 379 sales from July 1 to July 31 compared to 453 in July of 2007.  The average selling price for that period was $382,120 compared to an average selling price of $396,537 for the same period in 2007.  The average number of days a house was on the market was 67 compared to 45 days for the same period in 2007.  Currently there are 2,924 houses on the market outside of Calgary, and it is a great time to buy!!
